It is pre-formatted with FAT32. When you get this, reformat to NTFS. It will be much faster and more efficient. When you plug it in the autorun program asks what type of computers you need to be able to attach it to. The correct selection automatically converts it to NTFS but you have to wait for it.
Use the short USB transfer cable, it speeds up the process.
The 500gb portable hard drive is a nice size not too small and not too large and perfect weight, not too heavy and not cheap feeling. It uses only one USB port for power and data. It has impressive data transfer rates. About 1GB per minute transfer on my Win7 laptop.
Utterly silent during normal operation (you will have to lean close to hear it running at all), and it runs pretty cool for what it is (it’ll get perceptibly warm after a while, but never ‘hot’).
